GREAT FALLS - It was a special night.
The crowd at the Class AA state wrestling tournament witnessed a new addition to the four-time state champion fraternity, saw a new state team champion crowned for the first time in six years and watched the Glacier Wolfpack bring home the first team trophy in school history.
It was an action-packed evening.
Billings Senior wrestler Tanner Sprenkle won a last second 6-5 decision at 135 pounds over Great Falls wrestler Josh Morin to become the newest member of the four-time state champion club.
The Bozeman Hawks scored 270 points, had 13 placers and three champions to claim the championship, their first since 1972.
The Wolfpack, with 231 points, 12 placers and one champion, was second, Billings Skyview claimed the third place trophy with 224 points, Billings Senior scored 170 points to overcome fifth place Flathead in the championship round.
"It feels good. I'm so proud of all these kids. They've been working hard for us all year," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.
"I want to thank all the parents for letting us have their kids throughout the year," Fischer added.
"We've got probably the neatest bunch of parents for support. These people drove over from Kalispell. We got one of the biggest crowds. That was huge for us," the coach said.
The Wolfpack got several upsets on its way to the trophy stand, including senior Brayden Roberts' victory over former state champ Dylan Mendenhall at 145 and Joel Horn's 7-4 decision over Flathead's Connor Thomas at 285. All three wound up as state runners-up.
Junior Shane St. Onge also picked up a last second win in the 152-pound semifinal.
Fischer couldn't wait to talk about all of them.
"I don't think there were was one person in the gym who would have bet on Brayden," Fischer said.
"But he got it done. I tell you what, as coaches we believe in him.
You get him in a scramble, he's going to win that scramble. He got into a scramble, put the kid on his back. The kid came up dazed. Brayden hit him in a head and arm later. That was one of the best upsets of the tournament. I'm very proud of Brayden."
Roberts couldn't quite believe he had defeated Mendenhall.
"I went out there and gave it all I had. It's my senior year. and I've never placed at state. I figured I'd go for it all," he said.
"I don't know how I pulled it off. I'm speechless, because he sure is a great wrestler. But I've practiced as hard as I could all year and I left it all on the mat.
"I had a spark and just went after it. I had him pinned twice," he said.
"(Mendenhall) kind of went for a shot and I threw a head and arm. When (the referee) slapped the mat, I couldn't believe it. I was in shock.
"It was great to see the expression on my coaches' face," he smiled.
As for Horn, Fischer just smiled.
"Joel Horn! There again, senior kid ... gosh I'm so proud."
As for St. Onge, "he had a bunch of matches that just required heart to get through," the coach said.
"He had overtime yesterday and today he was down by 2 with 10 seconds left. He hit a standing gramby. What a way to finish - and we get him back."
The Wolfpack graduates just four members of the 2010-11 team.
"We're sitting pretty good. I feel good about where we are at," he said.
For the Flathead Braves, the ride home on Saturday night was likely a long and quiet one. This state tournament simply didn't work out for them from the beginning.
"It was definitely not the tournament I was expecting," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.
"I thought we wrestled really well last weekend and that we had been wrestling really well this whole season. For them to go out there flat two days in a row was ... surprising.
"I feel really bad for our seniors. They really wanted this bad and it just wasn't happening for us," the coach said.
"My seniors are great wrestlers. It was a pleasure coaching all of them," he said.
"But we never got rolling. There were a couple times we'd put together a couple wins and then we'd have a huge letdown where we thought we were going to get a big win out of somebody.
"When that's going on the entire tournament, that's hard," Owen said.
There were some bright spots, though.
Junior Larry Francis finished second at 160 pounds and senior Travis Ozegovich finished fourth at 215 pounds.
"Larry had a great tournament. He made a few mistakes in the final and it cost him, but he had a great tournament," Owen said.
"Really proud of (Ozegovich)," the coach added. "He got stronger and stronger every time he stepped out there."
