'Camille' comes to town
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 11 months AGO
A fundraiser for the uninsured patient fund at Diversified Social Services, Inc. and Dirne Community Health Center will be traveling throughout Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene today.
And you can have your picture taken with it, too.
Camille, a 6-month-old Bactrian camel, will visit local businesses where she will pose for snapshots and all the attention she can muster as part of "Camille in the Community."
While there is no charge to see Camille, organizers hope people will visit the hosting businesses and make a donation.
The collaboration between Diversified Social Services, Inc., and the Dirne Community Health Center was the brainchild of event coordinator Kristina L. Nicholas Anderson. The licensed masters social worker said she has seen an increasing number of people seeking mental health services without the ability to obtain or afford health insurance.
"Camille in the Community seemed the perfect way to raise awareness of the issue, help advertise local businesses, and fund local mental health services all at the same time," she said.
Diversified Social Services, Inc. has served individuals with severe and chronic mental illness since 2001.
In 2010, with the economic downturn and an increase in small businesses unable to provide insurance to their employees, an uninsured patient fund was established to meet the needs of those without health insurance.
Donations and funds raised through community events and pony rides have enabled those who would otherwise have been unable to access services obtain equine assisted mental health services.
Between medical and dental services, the Dirne Community Health Center saw more than 10,000 patients in 2010.
Camille's route will include the following host businesses:
