Sandpoint ousts Lakeland at regionals

SANDPOINT - Nothing can take the pressure out of a loser-out game like a quick start, and Sandpoint got just that Saturday night at the 4A Region 1 tournament, jumping out to a 21-4 lead and downing the Hawks 51-32 at Les Rogers Court.
Blaine Shultz and Jackson Olin each scored 13 points to lead Sandpoint (11-12), and Cole Fuhrman had a stellar game on both ends of the court, scoring 11 points to go with six boards and spearheading a strong defensive effort.
"Cole Fuhrman came out tonight and played huge. He was blocking out, rebounding, playing help-side defense; the best game he's had as a Bulldog," said Sandpoint coach Tyler Haynes, whose team shot 7 for 15 from beyond the arc. "We kind of fed off that and got hot. I don't think we took a bad shot in the first half."
Hunter Arno scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds, and Trent Derrick added eight and seven for the Hawks (4-18), whose season came to an end after a cold-shooting first half, where they were out-scored 29-8. The Hawks made 11 of 50 shots from the field overall.
No. 2 Sandpoint will travel south once again on Tuesday to face No. 1 Moscow (7-13) in the Bear Den, looking to keep the season alive. The Bulldogs led the Bears by five points with five minutes left in a tough loss on Thursday, and will look to bounce back.
"We feel good," said Haynes, whose team traveled a similar road two years ago and beat Moscow twice in a row to get to state. "That's a tough place to play, and we've certainly had success there in the past."
