A Washington man is in the hospital after being shot in the back by another man near Libby early Sunday morning, but there have been no arrests in the case.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, with the caller reporting that Scott Haskins, 38, of Olympia, Wash., had been shot by Conrad Budd, 69, at Budd’s Libby-area residence.
Deputies responded while Fisher River Fire Department personnel treated Haskins, who was transported by ALERT helicopter to a nearby hospital at 4:23 a.m.
He had suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper back and currently is in stable condition, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.
“Witnesses said there had been an argument and a brief altercation between Haskins and Budd at Budd’s residence preceding the shooting. Haskins was apparently attempting to re-enter Budd’s residence after being told to leave,” the release states. “Budd fired one round from a handgun, striking Haskins in the upper back. Budd was detained and questioned about the shooting, but later released. Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident.”
While no charges have been filed, the incident still is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office.
Sheriff Roby Bowe was not available Monday to elaborate on the shooting.
Under state law, a person is justified in using force to stop someone from unlawfully entering his or her home.
