NAMPA — “Anything can happen. They don’t mail in the medals, they let the guys go into the matches and figure it out,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said prior to the start of this weekend’s state wrestling tournament at the Idaho Center in Nampa.

Post Falls qualified 11 wrestlers for this week’s state tournament, which runs from today to Saturday.

“All our seeded guys have a chance to do well,” Reardon said. “At a state tournament, anything can happen.”

Defending 5A champion Coeur d’Alene qualified 16 wrestlers, with Steven Price (112 pounds) earning an at-large bid.

“We’re going to need to get points out of everyone,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Having two guys advance to the finals and whoever gets hot at the right time can win this thing.”

Lewiston, Centennial, Caldwell, Post Falls and Highland also figure to be in the mix for the 5A title with Coeur d’Alene.

“Centennial qualified 22, Highland will be competitive and those teams out of our league will be tough,” Moffat said. “I think this will be one of the tightest 5A races we’ve had in some time.”

Post Falls qualified 11, while Lake City has three under coach Corey Owen.

The tournament will move to a three-day event, a change from the two-day format in recent years in Pocatello.

“All of our guys have been there before,” Moffat said. “There’s some big lapses between matches and it will be hard to get on a roll, but whoever stays focused over those three days can win it. If we wrestle to our capability, we’ve got as good a shot as anyone to win it.”

“Whether it’s two or three days doesn’t matter,” Reardon said. “Two days is what we do all year, but it’s not a huge deal for us. It’s a matter of being mentally prepared. Once you get into that mindset and set your agenda to that, two or three days is no big deal after that.”

In 4A, Lakeland will send 10 wrestlers from the regional champion Hawks.

In 3A, Timberlake qualified its largest number in school history and with 14 to represent the Tigers, coach Ryan Montang hopes for the school’s first trophy.

“It’s been a building process,” Montang said. “We’ve never been close to a trophy. My first year we took four to state and placed two and last year we had nine to state and placed four. I think we’re definitely going to be in the running.”

St. Maries qualified seven under second year coach Rodney Cochrane.

In 2A, Kootenai wrestlers Ty Beare (285), Chris Unger, Mathew Speelman and Joe Anderson will represent the Warriors.
