Mercer leads Lumberjacks into title game

RATHDRUM - Senior Jake Mercer had a game-high 18 points as the St. Maries Lumberjacks defeated the Kellogg Wildcats 59-41 on Wednesday night to advance to the 3A District 1 championship game Friday at Lakeland High.

"We came out playing some good pressure defense tonight," St. Maries coach Craig Wicks said. "Our goal was to limit (Nick) Serrano's touches and be physical with (Tyler) Morgan inside. It was an overall good defensive effort."

Warren Joiner had 17 points, eight rebounds and Ian Heath 10 points and nine rebounds for St. Maries (17-4), which faces Priest River in the title game. Priest River defeated Bonners Ferry in the other semifinal game 67-64 in overtime.

"Jake had a good night for us," Wicks said. "Warren was excellent on the boards. We were pretty balanced scoring and had good execution."

Ryan Beggerly scored 13 points for Kellogg (14-7), which faces Bonners Ferry in a loser-out game on Friday at 6 p.m.

PLUMMER - Joseph Chapman scored a game-high 20 points as the Knights defeated the Miners to advance to a state 1A Division I play-in game for the first time since they separated the classification in 2009.

"It's a huge hurdle for us as a team," Lakeside coach Bill Brebner said. "The first two years I've been the coach, we hadn't beaten them at all, but we were able to win two of three this year."

Nate Weaselhead had 14 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists, Lamont Higgins eight points and 10 rebounds for Lakeside (12-7), which will face the winner of tonight's District 3 third-place game between Clearwater Valley and Lapwai on Saturday at St. Maries High at 6 p.m. to advance to the state tournament at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

"The kids just worked their tails off tonight," Brebner said. "We played good defense and a lot of extra passes turned into layups."

Tyler Beard scored 12 points for Wallace, which concludes the season 8-12.

MULLAN - Senior Justin Scheel scored 14 points to lead the Tigers past the Wampus Cats in a 1A District 1 Division I playoff game at the Mullan Pavilion.

Mullan (4-15) will face Kootenai on Friday in Harrison Flats for the district's lone berth to the state tournament, starting next Thursday at Caldwell High.

Zach Klein scored 17 points to lead Clark Fork, which concludes the season 4-10.
