Chiefs win first conference game, Maidens get first win of
season
RONAN - The Chiefs scored 30 points in the fourth quarter to blast past Whitefish and win their first conference game of the season, 69-56, last Tuesday night. All season Ronan had been right there against Northwestern A opponents and they were finally able to break through.
Senior Kevin Wroblewski scored 18, while fellow senior J.J. Tanner added 16 in the effort. The Chiefs were actually down 26-25 at halftime before taking a 39-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
Tanner had seven points in the fourth quarter and senior Lucus Black had the same amount in the last period and finished with eight points overall.
Ronan avenged an earlier loss to Whitefish, a 55-42 setback on the road, which was played on Jan. 27.
Now the Chiefs will turn their attention to the divisional tournament where they will have the home court advantage all the way through at the Ronan Event Center. This win should be a nice push for momentum, and in divisionals, anything can happen.
The Ronan girls got their offense going and boy, were they scary. Traveling up to Whitefish on Friday, the Maidens downed the Lady Bulldogs 54-37 to win their first game of the season.
A conference matchup, the Maidens had lost at home to Whitefish earlier this season, 36-31, on Jan. 27.
Ronan made sure that history didn't repeat itself, coming out on fire and grabbing the 14-8 lead after the first quarter and extending their lead to 32-12 at halftime. The Maidens point total in the first half was higher than their full score in 10 games this season.
Their defense came as no surprise, it's something they've excelled at all season, and the Maidens held Whitefish to just 18 points through three quarters. The Lady Bulldogs scored 19 in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the lead that Ronan had built.
Sophomore Courtney Clairmont led the Maidens with 14 points, while senior Tailyr Irvine added 12 and junior Ashley Grandchamp added 10.
The win gives Ronan momentum heading into the divisional tournament this weekend in their home gym.
