NAMPA - Coeur d'Alene, the defending state 5A champion, sent 13 of 16 qualifiers into the quarterfinals of the state wrestling tournament Thursday at the Idaho Center.

The Vikings slipped into a second-place tie with 5A Inland Empire League rival Lewiston with 53 points. Centennial leads with 65.5 points following the consolation first round on Thursday night.

"It was a good start for us today," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "There's still a lot of wrestling left. Tomorrow's quarterfinal round will be a big round."

A.J. Konda (103 pounds), Steven Price (112), Graison Le (119), Brenden Northington (119), Hudson Staub (125), Kyle Siegwarth (130), Kenny Staub (140), Jake Graham (145), Johnny Peregrina (160), Garrett DeMers (171), Caleb Davis (189), Thomas Tucker (215) and Shaun Duffy (215) will compete today for berths into the semifinals tonight at 6:30 PST.

Two Vikings remain alive in the consolation bracket. Senior Colin Comack, a state runner-up at 160 pounds, went 0-2 for Coeur d'Alene and was eliminated.

"I feel really bad for him," Moffat said. "We were expecting some big points from him. Someone else is going to have to step up to keep us in title contention."

Post Falls, which sent 11 to state, was eighth with 27 points after getting wins by four pins and two technical falls in the first round.

Defending champion James Ost (135), Mitch Crain(112), Tyler Booth (140), Austin Wilson (145), Nathan McLeod (152), Kendall Nuss (160) and Cole Jesienouski (171) advanced to the quarters for Post Falls. Two remain in the hunt in the consolation bracket for the Trojans.

Lake City sent three of five onward in the championship bracket as Steven Collins (119), Calen Lambert (189) and Jacob Benson (285) all had wins in the opening round. One Timberwolf advanced in the consolation bracket.

Lakeland went 2-8 in the first round and is in 12th place with 18 points in the 26-team 4A tournament after the consolation round. Tanner Wright (112 pounds) and Dustin Hannawalt (119) advanced via pin for Lakeland. Three Hawks remained alive in the consolation bracket with wins in their consolation matches.

Timberlake had five wrestlers — Scott Larson (103), Kody Hongslo (119), Trevor Roth (140), Kyle White (152) and Forrest Herring (152) — out of 14 win to advance in the 3A championship bracket. The Tigers are in 11th with 24.50 points. Four remain alive in the consolation bracket for Timberlake. St. Maries sent three of eight — Joseph Bloomsburg (140), Derek Charles (160) and Tony Appel (285) — into the championship bracket and is tied for 15th with 21 points. Three remain in the consolation bracket for the Lumberjacks.

Kootenai went 1-3 in the first round of the 2A tournament, with heavyweight senior Ty Beare earning a pin in one minute, nine seconds. One Warrior advanced in the consolation bracket.

The semifinals are scheduled for tonight at 6:30 PST.
