Defending champion Coeur d'Alene leads heading into final day

NAMPA - The Coeur d'Alene Vikings remained in good position to defend their state 5A wrestling title, while Post Falls stayed in the hunt to bring home some hardware as well in the state wrestling tournament Friday at the Idaho Center.
Heading into today's finals round, Coeur d'Alene led the 5A competition with 167 points with Caldwell nipping at the Vikings' heels with 161.5 points. Post Falls is sixth with 137.5 points, while Lake City is 14th with 24 points.
Coeur d'Alene will have three wrestlers battling for an individual state championship today - A.J. Konda (103 pounds), Johnny Peregrina (160) and Caleb Davis (189).
Post Falls, which went 15-3 in its matches Friday, will have five wrestlers in the finals - defending champion James Ost (135), along with Tyler Booth (140), Austin Wilson (145), Nathan McLeod (152) and Cole Jesienouski (171).
Coeur d'Alene will also have three wrestlers in the third-place finals and five in the consolation finals, giving the Vikings a chance to score points for the team competition in 11 of the 14 weight classes. Post Falls has one wrestler in the third-place finals and a pair in the consolation finals.
"I thought we wrestled hard and still have a chance," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "This team competition is going to be won in the third-place matches. It's tight and you never know what can happen."
Post Falls coach Pete Reardon remains optimistic about his team's chances of matching the school's best finish at state (fourth) and bringing home a trophy.
"This was quite a day for us," Reardon said. "To win as many matches as we did on the second day of the tournament, I'm proud of these kids and what they were able to accomplish. Getting five wrestlers through to the finals is exciting and we'll see what we can do."
In 4A, Lakeland is 20th with 21 points and doesn't have a wrestler in today's finals.
Timberlake is 16th with 42.5 points in 3A, while St. Maries is 20th with 24 points. Kody Hongslo will wrestle for third place for Timberlake, while Allan Foote will wrestle for the consolation title.
Kootenai rang up 30 points for 21st place in 2A. Heavyweight Ty Beare pinned his opponent in the second period in the semifinals to advance to today’s championship match as Kootenai’s lone remaining wrestler.
In 5A, Konda won his semifinal match in dramatic fashion. Trailing 6-2 with 1:05 remaining in the third period, Konda pinned Capital’s Hunter Manwaring to advance to the finals.
“I was having a hard time scoring,” said Konda, a sophomore who finished fourth last year. “But when he went for the fireman’s carry, he left himself exposed and I just went for it. I knew I had to do something and that was the chance I was looking for.”
McLeod, a junior, scored one of the more unlikely wins of the evening with an 11th-hour Gramby Cradle against Lewiston’s Sammy Metz in the 152-pound weight class.
With Metz in control of the match and leading 9-5 with 30 seconds remaining in the third period, McLeod scored five points with the Gramby Cradle, a move that gives a wrestler two points for a reversal and three points for a near fall.
“I’ve been practicing Grambys from the time I was knee-high to a grasshopper,” said McLeod, who was also celebrating his 17th birthday. “I knew I had to do something big. Time was running out and that was about to be it for me. Fortunately, I was able to pull off the win.”
The most shocking result of the evening came from Jesienouski when he upset top-seeded Armando Roggio of Vallivue.
Jesienouski rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to win 9-7.
“I was able to get good pressure on top,” Jesienouski said. “That was really the difference for me tonight. I just tried to wrestle my game and not think too hard about what the seedings were.”
In the semis at 189, Coeur d’Alene’s Davis dominated Lake City’s lone semifinalist, Calen Lambert, in posting an 11-2 win.
Davis, who finished fourth at state last year, will get a shot at redemption in the finals against Caldwell’s Tim Hartwig. Last season, Hartwig edged Davis 7-4 in the third-place final.
