RATHDRUM - Eric Holbrook dished out a game-high nine assists as the Priest River Spartans won their third consecutive 3A district championship with a 52-34 win over St. Maries on Friday night at Lakeland High's Hawk Court.
Holbrook was named Intermountain League Co-MVP before the game along with teammate and fellow senior Max Salesky, who scored seven points for the Spartans (17-5), who play Fruitland (16-6) in their state opener Thursday at 2 p.m. PST at Meridian High.
"We knew repeating as league and district champs for a third straight time would be tough to do so this is special for us, Priest River coach Ryan Bodecker said. "We were super focused, stuck to the game plan and I haven't seen us play defense that well for a long time."
Senior Zach Lehman scored 12 points for St. Maries (17-5), which faces Kellogg in the second-place game today at 5 at Lakeland for the district's second berth to state.
"We'll regroup and get ready for a tough game tomorrow," St. Maries coach Craig Wicks said after the game. It'll be a dogfight. Whichever team shows up ready to play will win and we will be ready to go from the tip."
