Wolfpack cruises by Bravettes

There are good butterflies and bad butterflies.
On Friday night, the Glacier Wolfpack got a healthy dose of the good while the Flathead Bravettes struggled with the bad butterflies.
The final result was a 61-36 crosstown victory for the Wolfpack.
"My girls were excited and they were ready," said Glacier coach Kris Salonen.
"As a coach, you wonder when they are giddy like that ... what does that mean? We all had butterflies. We were all nervous. But we rose to the occasion and we played so well," Salonen said.
The Bravettes played some of their best basketball of the season last week, but they had coach Karly Tait shaking her head Friday.
"They're there somewhere," she said when asked what happened to last week's team.
"We're just a little bit inconsistent, still. Maybe one too many butterflies in the stomach. I just don't think we were mentally prepared like we needed to be for this one," she said.
Glacier definitely showed up to play from the get-go.
The Wolfpack defense hassled the Bravettes incessantly in the first period, causing at least half a dozen Flathead turnovers. Meanwhile, Glacier didn't give the Bravette defense anyone it could key on as it spread its offense among four players.
Glacier led 12-3 with 3:08 left in the first quarter.
"Our half court defense (was key)," Salonen said. "We were forced to go to half court defense because we were in foul trouble. We work on that every day in practice, just getting stops.
"We were very aggressive. That alone was just huge," she said.
Flathead battled back from that deficit to get within three points by the end of the period, thanks to the efforts of Tess Brenneman and Emma Andrews.
But Glacier continued its efforts in the second period and Flathead simply couldn't keep up. Glacier led 32-20 by half.
"We didn't shoot the ball very well and they did," Tait said.
"There were some flashes of some good things and some times when we were taking the ball hard to the basket, but we just didn't play as well as we needed to and every time they went on a run, we just didn't match it.
"I thought we played hard, but I thought Glacier played harder, to be honest," Tait said.
"I was very surprised," Salonen said of the final point difference. "I thought it was going to be a battle. I really did.
"(The Bravettes) have been doing so many good things," Salonen said.
"But when a team steps on the court and takes them out ... they got in foul trouble. We got in foul trouble too, but we already were on a roll," she said.
Salonen complimented the efforts of Cami Mathison and Cassidy Hashley.
"Right now, for Cami to come off the bench and do so many good things for us and be consistent ... our seniors are stepping up," she said.
"And what Cassidy Hashley has done for our team ... we take her for granted, but she is a huge reason for our success," the coach said.
Flathead did win the battle of the boards - 53-38. But it also had 26 turnovers and just six steals. The Wolfpack turned the ball over just 15 times and had 15 steals.
Glacier had four girls score 12 points each - Ashlee Waggener, Baylee Quay, Paige Latimer and Cassidy Hashley. Latimer also had eight rebounds.
Tess Brenneman led Flathead with 13 points and six rebounds.
The scenario for Glacier (10-9) now is ... to wait.
Big Sky and Helena play today in Helena. If Big Sky wins, Glacier will be fourth in Western AA and will host a playoff. If Helena High wins, the Wolfpack finishes fifth and goes to Helena.
"We just wait and see," Salonen said.
"All week long, I said we're not going to talk about what (the Bengals) are doing. We need to take care of us. We get wins and we'll go from there."
The Bravettes (7-11, 2-9) travel today to Hellgate.
"The season is still very much alive. We had a goal to get to state and we can still do that. We've got to find that team from last week and bring them back," Tait said.
"We'll live to see another day. (Today) is at Hellgate. We've got to go there and get a win."
