RATHDRUM - Zach Lehman scored 10 of his 23 points in overtime - including 6 of 7 from the line - to lead the St. Maries Lumberjacks past the Kellogg Wildcats 64-61 at Lakeland High's Hawk Court in the second-place game of the 3A District 1 tournament, sending the Lumberjacks to state.
Jake Mercer added 13 points, six rebounds and five steals for St. Maries (18-5), which opens state against Sugar-Salem (16-7) on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. PST at Meridian High.
Warren Joiner had 12 points and five rebounds for the Lumberjacks. Ian Heath grabbed seven rebounds, but Heath and Sampson knocked heads while going for a loose ball midway through the third quarter. Both were bleeding from the head, and missed the rest of the game. St. Maries coach Craig Wicks said both should be back for state.
"Zach put us on his back," Wicks said. "Nick Cordell stepped up and played more minutes than he's used to, and had a great game. The kids didn't put their heads down. Kellogg made a run and we were able to get our composure back, and we're going south for a little while."
Ryan McDonald sank two free throws with less than 20 seconds to go in regulation to force overtime for Kellogg, which finished 15-7. Nick Serrano led the Wildcats with 12 points.
St. Maries beat Kellogg for the third time in four tries this season, and the second time in four days at districts
