Zag teams jump into WCC tourneys Sunday

LAS VEGAS - Gonzaga's men's and women's basketball teams both earned byes into Sunday's semifinals of the West Coast Conference basketball tournaments which begins Friday the Orleans Arena.
The Bulldog women, who went a perfect 14-0 in WCC play and won a seventh straight regular-season title, will play the 11 a.m. semifinal Sunday against either No. 4 seed Portland, No. 5 Santa Clara or No. 8 San Francisco.
The Gonzaga men, who shared the regular-season title with Saint Mary's for their 11th straight regular-season crown but enter the tourney as the No. 2 seed, will face No. 3 USF, No. 6 Pepperdine or No. 7 San Diego.
The Bulldogs and Gaels split their season series, Gonzaga winning at Saint Mary's last Thursday to move into the tie and both clubs won their regular-season finales. Since the two teams split their series the tiebreaker formula is how each did in descending order of conference finish. Gonzaga split with third-place San Francisco while the Gaels swept the Dons, thus giving the top seed to Saint Mary's.
The tournament gets under way at noon Friday with a pair of women's first-round games. - No. 5 Santa Clara takes on No. 8 San Francisco, followed by No. 6. Loyola Marymount facing No. 7 San Diego. Saturday's women's action has No. 4 Portland meeting the Santa Clara-USF winner at noon followed by No. 3 Pepperdine facing the winner of LMU-San Diego.
The Bulldog women face the Portland/Santa Clara/USF survivor at 11 a.m. Sunday, followed by No. 2 Saint Mary's meeting the Pepperdine/LMU/San Diego winner. The semifinal winners meet Monday at noon for the title in a game to be televised on ESPNU.
The men's tourney opens Friday with No. 5 Portland facing No. 8 Loyola Marymount 6 p.m., followed by No. 6 Pepperdine meeting No. 7 San Diego. Saturday has No. 4 Santa Clara meeting the winner of Portland/LMU at 6 p.m., followed by No. 3 USF meeting the winner of Pepperdine/San Diego.
The Bulldogs will get the winner of the USF/Pepperdine/San Diego survivor Sunday in the late semifinal at 7:30 p.m. SMC will meet the Santa Clara/Portland/LMU winner in Sunday's first semifinal at 5 p.m. Both semifinals will be aired on ESPN2 with Monday's 6 p.m. title game on ESPN. BYUtv will televise the Friday and Saturday men's games. Brigham Young University is joining the WCC next season, and BYUtv wants to expose its fans to the WCC.
