Polson boys soccer reached state final four

A controversial shot off the crossbar hurt, but it couldn't erase what a wonderful season the Pirates had in 2010 on the pitch. Starting with the County Fair in the fall, a preseason workout regime more brutal than a sidekick from Chuck Norris, the regular season concluded with an undefeated conference season and Northwestern A title heading into the playoffs.

Polson allowed just three goals during its Northwestern A schedule while tying and defeating eventual state champion Libby.

In the playoffs, Polson won in dramatic fashion, scoring in the 76th minute to break a 1-1 tie over Corvallis. The Pirates would win 2-1 and advance to the semi-finals against Belgrade.

While the Panthers won 1-0 on a goal that had some wondering if the shot should have been ruled a cornerkick after the ball bounced off the football field goal cross bar above the actual soccer goal, the accomplishments of advancing to within one game of the state championship shows that soccer is an up-and-coming program for the Pirates.

Polson Football knocks off defending state champions, twice

Head coach Scott Wilson knew his team was going to be young going into the 2010 season, but that didn't stop them from advancing to the state playoffs and winning their first playoff game since 2003.

The Pirates saw excellent play from junior quarterback Vince DiGiallonardo and wide receiver Kyle Bagnell, who connected several times during the season on offense.

Their defense also came up big in several clutch situations as the Pirates were no strangers to close games and did knock around a few teams as well.

Polson beat defending Class A state champion Frenchtown in their first game of the season, 21-16 and after going 6-2 in the regular season, they matched up against the Broncs again in the first round of the playoffs, this time pulling out the 27-21 double overtime victory.
