Mitchell, Thomas win Rocky mat titles
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 14 years AGO
MISSOULA - Fifth and ninth, respectively, with one champion apiece.
That's how the Glacier Wolfpack and Flathead Braves wrestling teams came out of the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic this past weekend at Sentinel High School.
Glacier scored 140 points, just one-half point behind fourth place Bozeman, and Flathead scored 121.5 points.
Defending champion University High scored 210.5 points to easily win the tournament. Coeur d'Alene was second at 166, followed by Central Valley at 163.
Polson wound up 12th with 94.5 points, Columbia Falls was 20th with 54 points and Libby 22nd at 47 points. There were 27 teams in the tournament.
Great Falls High wrestler Cole Mendenhall (130) won his third Rocky title, as did Havre's Eli Hinebauch (145). Jordan Rogers of Mead won the quick pin award.
Glacier's Kaleb Mitchell (105) and Flathead's Connor Thomas (285) each won Rocky titles.
Mitchell won a 7-0 decision over Josh Smart of Great Falls High, while Thomas won a 16-7 major decision over Dan Shoultz of Central Valley.
"He dominated," Flathead coach Matt Owen said of Thomas. "It was a very good performance. The best thing is he's mixing up his attacks. He wasn't relying on throwing the kids. It's very promising at this point in the season to start adding to his arsenal," he said.
"Really dominant performance for Kaleb this weekend," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.
"We lost a lot of heartbreakers (in Saturday's first round), but the six kids who won did amazing. I was really impressed with the way they went out and wrestled and finished strong," he said.
Owen was feeling pretty good after the tournament - the Braves had only nine wrestlers and were still close to the Montana Class AA schools. Flathead was 19 points behind Bozeman, 18.5 behind Glacier and only 5.5 behind Great Falls High.
"We broke the top 10, which is not too bad," Owen said.
"It would have been nice to punch in a couple more. But overall, I was pretty pleased. I would have liked to see a couple more kids finish with a win. It's always good to end a tournament on a win," he said.
"Now our big concentration is getting some people healthy and getting our full lineup. For us, to be within shooting distance of those teams with a short squad is a good thing. We need to get everybody back, everybody healthy and make a run at (state)," he added.
"I'd just like to go to a tournament with a full squad," he smiled.
