SWAT visit ends peacefully

To passers-by, it probably looked like a SWAT team standoff, but it wasn’t.
An incident on Cedar Mill Road south of Kalispell at about 8 p.m. Sunday turned out to be something of an overreaction, Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said Monday.
It originated with a call from a man who said he got into a tussle with his brother when he went to visit him at his Cedar Mill Road home. The man requested a welfare check on his brother, who has a history with law enforcement, Curry said.
“The initial impression from the shift supervisor was that perhaps there was a barricaded subject,” Curry said.
The county SWAT team was dispatched to the scene but never actually deployed.
“They just kind of hung out at the end of the road and the negotiator talked to [the subject] on the phone,” Curry said. “Eventually, when we got the whole story, the guy hadn’t really done anything wrong. Maybe a misdemeanor.”
Curry said there will be an internal review of how the situation was handled.
