Lady Panthers fall behind

It was a fast-paced game Thursday night at home as the Alberton Lady Panthers took on the Superior Lady Bobcats. Fans on one side of the gym were dressed in maroon and white, while the Superior fans were donned in red and blue. It was a clash of the two county teams and Superior would be the victor.
Minutes into the first quarter, the home team wasn’t falling too far behind and when the first eight minutes were up, they were only down by seven, 15-8.
By the second quarter, the girls found themselves trying to play a game of catch up that they wouldn’t win. Superior strengthened their lead going into halftime, 36-17.
In the third quarter, a Superior shooter had three, three pointers. They Lady Panthers were outscored, 14-27 in the third. In the last quarter, they played Superior pretty evenly, 12-13, but lost overall, 43-76.
Still, a couple of the girls on the team put quite a few points on the board.
Dani Hanley had 19 points for the Lady Panthers while Andi Clark added 12 and Krysta Henley chipped in 10. Jenna Rausch added two.
Coach Jim Baldwin said last week that he was expecting an up tempo game from Superior and they certainly got one.
Next up, on Friday, was a conference game against Lincoln, which Baldwin believed would be a good test for where the girls were. The girls were at home again and they ended up falling short by five points, 22-27.
Despite the loss, the girls actually played out ahead of Lincoln in the first couple of quarters and led at halftime. It was in the third and fourth quarters that they faltered.
In the first quarter, the girls jumped out to a five point lead and then lead going into halftime by five points, 13-8. Lincoln, however, started the second half strong with an 8-1 run on the Lady Panthers in the third quarter. In the fourth, the girls jumped out to score eight points, but it was too little too late and they ended up losing the game.
Hanley led the team with 10 points for the game. Rausch, Henley and Mariah Turnbull all scored two. Clark added six points.
This week, the girls have a game against St. Regis on Thursday at home and a game against Drummond on Friday away.

Alberton sends one to state
Twelve Alberton Panthers competed at divisional track over the past weekend, but only one ended up performing well enough in order to stamp a ticket to state. Jake Thompson will represent the Alberton Panthers at the state track meet this weekend in an event that Coach Rachel Clevenger said they weren't expecting. Thompson, who is a sophomore, took fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 39-7.
St. Regis students get pleasant surprise
St. Regis students received a surprise this week after they finished taking their semester tests on Monday. Yearbooks are a creative outlet that commemorates an important time in your life. While making them is hard work, the result is a fun way to document life and hold onto good memories. On Monday, thanks to the support of businesses from around the county, last year’s juniors, sophomores and freshmen all received a free year book. The seniors of class 2010 also received a free book.
