BUTTE - Saturday's Class AA Duals weren't exactly what either Glacier or Flathead had in mind.

The Glacier Wolfpack finished third at Butte High. The depleted Flathead Braves were seventh.

Bozeman defeated Billings Skyview 36-30 in the championship. Missoula Sentinel was fourth, Great Falls High fifth and Helena sixth.

The Wolfpack got off to a tough start, falling 42-30 to Billings Skyview in their first dual of the day.

But Glacier bounced right back with a 51-38 win over Billings Senior, then followed that with a 42-31 win over Great Falls High and a 43-21 victory over Missoula Sentinel.

"We lost right away to Skyview. Skyview has a real tough team," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.

"This just gave us an idea where we are at. We are right in the mix, but not where we want to be right now," Fischer said.

The coach complimented the efforts of Lucas Mantel (130) and Dawson Day (171).

"Lucas was very solid. He went out there and got it done," the coach said.

Mantel pinned three of his four opponents. The only competitor to get the better of him Saturday was Great Falls High wrestler Cole Mendenhall, the No. 1 ranked individual at 130 pounds and the 2010 Class AA state champ at 119.

"Dawson jumped up and wrestled 171 and did really well today. I was really impressed with him," Fischer said.

As for Flathead, it came away with a couple of wins and was in both duals it lost.

Flathead defeated Great Falls Russell 55-30, then fell 43-42 to No. 3 ranked Great Falls High in the second round. They Braves lost 48-30 to Great Falls High, then finished the day on a good note with a 40-36 win over Billings Senior.

Flathead coach Matt Owen liked a lot of what he saw from his team.

"Not too bad at all," Owen said.

"Overall very good. I was pleased to get a couple wins this weekend," he said.

"We're still not at full strength. We had some of our younger kids in the lineup, but they did a really good job. As a team, we looked great."

In addition to Travis Ozegovich and Alex Rudolph, who have been out for a couple of weeks now, the Flathead Braves were without the help of Cody Tally (125 - shoulder) and Connor Thomas (285 - SAT tests) on Saturday.

"Even having one of (the missing wrestlers) would have been a difference-maker," Owen said of the two duals the Braves lost.

The coach complimented Caleb Piasecki (119) and Larry Francis (160).

"Caleb looked awesome. He pinned all three of the kids he wrestled. The kid he pinned from Great Falls High is a really tough kid. That's a really good win for Caleb."

Piasecki lost to that kid at the Rocky Mountain Classic.

"But right from the start of the match, he went out and took him down right away. Just a really dominating performance. He controlled the match from start to finish.

"Larry had a really good weekend. He was wrestling a lot more patient, waiting for things to open up," the coach said.
