SANDPOINT - Coeur d'Alene scored eight runs in the ninth inning to win the opener 12-4, then earned the sweep over the Peak Sand and Gravel Lakers with a 9-2 win in the nightcap Thursday in a class AA North Idaho League American Legion doubleheader at Pine St. Field.
After giving up three unearned runs in the first inning, starter Grant Curtis shut down the Lakers (6-9, 4-8 NIL), keeping the league-leading Lumbermen (24-11, 11-1) in the game until the bats came alive in extra innings.
"Grant pitched a very good game," said Lumbermen coach Lloyd Duman. "All of his pitches were working and he kept them off balance."
Lefty Matt Cade scattered six hits in the second game for the Lumbermen.
Curtis also had four hits in the two games. Pete Hoffman had five hits on the day for Coeur d'Alene, which will face Pullman tonight at 8:30 in the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Classic at McEuen Field.
