Veterans museum planned

POST FALLS - War memorabilia has found its way to John Dunlap's office over the years, but a lot of it has gone unnoticed due to the lack of display space.
That's about to change.
Just as we celebrate our freedom every year on the Fourth, the American Legion commander in Post Falls believes the next generation needs a place to absorb history of the sacrifices that have been made.
A veterans museum is being planned next to the Legion's post along Poleline Avenue.
"We hope to have it done by next year," Dunlap said.
Dunlap said the facility will give local veterans a place to take their memorabilia to if they desire and it will also serve as an educational war history center for youth and the community.
"We need something that this generation can leave for the next generation," Dunlap said. "We're trying to create awareness about veterans and keep history alive. We need a place where younger people can see the history."
Dunlap said a lot of memorabilia, including invasion grid maps, old newspapers, photo displays, flags and other items, has already been secured.
The museum will be built at the northwest corner of the Legion's property near the M60 tank and personnel carrier. Dunlap said a war airplane is also planned for the row of war memorials.
The site already has sewer and water available.
"We're in the planning stages," Dunlap said.
The final size hasn't been determined, but it will be roughly 150-by-90 feet and one story.
John Davis, head of Stratton Homes and the Legion's vice commander, will spearhead the construction. The building will resemble the post from the outside, Dunlap said.
Dunlap said a cost estimate hasn't been determined. While pledges have been made toward the project, no cash is in hand.
Several fundraisers, including a motorcycle ride hosted by the American Legion Riders in August, are being planned.
