HAYDEN - Two firefighters were injured Sunday afternoon when a duplex caught fire at 520 E. Orchard Avenue, according to fire and rescue agencies.
Fire crews responded to the scene, east of Government Way, at 1:05 p.m. No one was home when the blaze started.
One firefighter from the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department and another from Northern Lakes Fire & Rescue were injured by falling debris and hospitalized. Both were treated and released Sunday, according to Coeur d'Alene Deputy Chief Glenn Lauper.
One side of the duplex was heavily damaged by the flames. The roof was almost entirely burned off, and the ceiling collapsed, Battalion Chief Peter Vandall said.
Battling stiff winds, crews contained the blaze and prevented major damage to the other side of the duplex. Firefighters used tarps to protect personal belongings inside, Vandall said.
Four engines from multiple agencies responded to the call. Firefighters cleared the scene between 4:30 and 5.
Cause of the fire is under investigation.
Another structure fire on Saturday damaged a shed and garage on Ferrians Road in Hayden. The two weekend fires do not appear to be related, firefighters said.
