Lums beat Eagle, but end up second in pod
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 6 months AGO
COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen handed the Eagle Vipers their lone loss of the tournament with a 6-3 victory Sunday night at McEuen Field, but it wasn't enough to extend the Lums' stay at the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene American Legion Wood Bat Classic.
That's because Eagle had already wrapped up the No. 1 seed out of the McEuen pod earlier Sunday with a victory over the Pullman Patriots. Coeur d'Alene went 3-2 in pod play, stung by a 6-5 loss to Okotoks earlier Sunday, and a 12-10 loss to Rainier late Saturday night. That kept the Lums out of today's semifinals.
Jason Pattis pitched a complete game for Coeur d'Alene vs. Eagle, striking out eight. Pattis and Colin Comack each had two hits.
Earlier, Okotoks scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth to beat the Lums. Coeur d'Alene scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it, capped by Pete Hoffman's sacrifice fly that scored Pattis.
Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman had praise for Hoffman, who struck out six in eight innings.
Coeur d'Alene (27-13) travels to Prairie on Tuesday for a class AA North Idaho League doubleheader at 3 p.m. at Post Falls High.

COEUR d'ALENE - Leif Krapas had two hits, drove in two runs and stole four bases as the Coeur d'Alene Loggers beat the Coeur d'Alene Lumberjacks under-16 team in the final game for both teams in the Junior Division of the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Classic at Coeur d'Alene High's Ted Page Field.
Both teams finished second in their respective pods on Saturday.
Sean Sutton hit a two-run triple in the first inning for the Loggers (19-19), who return to action Wednesday at Silver Valley in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Morehouse Field in Osburn.

CHENEY - Jeremy McKinney's RBI single capped a three-run fifth inning as the Whitecaps finished 4-1 in pod play at Cheney High in the Junior Division of the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Tournament.
"We went 4-1 in this tournament and only gave up seven runs," Bayview coach Kim Rogstad said. "Our pitching and defense were just outstanding the whole time - it's a shame we're not playing tomorrow."
That's because of a 5-4 loss to Cheney on Friday, which kept the Whitecaps out of the semifinals today.
Bayview (15-3) now prepares for the state 18-and-under Babe Ruth playoffs this weekend in Lewiston. The Whitecaps face Lewiston in a best-of-3 series, with one game Friday and two on Saturday if necessary. The winner advances to regionals July 20-24 in Port Angeles, Wash.
