Saturday is disaster preparedness day
HAYDEN - A 13-year-old Eagle Scout candidate is organizing a community disaster preparedness day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Finucane Park.
The event will consist of active demonstrations, classes, hands-on education for all ages, and food provided by the Kootenai County Search & Rescue Auxiliary.
Cayman Kirkhart of Hayden Troop 911 hopes to have his Eagle court-of-honor awards ceremony on 9/11/11.
He has dubbed it "Be Prepared Day" and already has logged more than 30 hours in planning and organizing this event over the last seven months, according to a press release.
Firefighter challenge volunteers needed
COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department is looking for anyone 18 and older to volunteer at the Scott Firefighter Challenge this weekend.
Competitors will be tested in a series of firefighting trials, such as tower climbs, victim rescue and more, that test the limits of the firefighter's skill and strength, providing a fun and competitive training atmosphere.
Volunteers will be providing needed logistical support on the different coarse challenges.
The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday at Silverwood Theme Park.
For giving of their time and service, each volunteer will receive an event T-shirt and two tickets to Silverwood, the Northwest's Largest Theme and Water Park.
Interested volunteers can contact Coeur d'Alene Fire Department representative and firefighter Dylan Clark by email at [email protected].
Obama cancels trip to Whitefish, Mont.
President Barack Obama has canceled a trip to Montana and will not be in Whitefish later this week, Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial said Tuesday.
The White House Press Office confirmed the president won't be in the Flathead Valley from July 8-10.
Dial said the president's trip to Whitefish had been scheduled and arrangements had been made before the trip was canceled late last week. Obama reportedly was to have stayed at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, though lodge officials said they could neither confirm nor deny the president's stay.
The local rumor mill was churning earlier this week, indicating the president was coming either for a vacation or for a fundraiser for Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont.
