Oliver Francis Murphy, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2011, at his home in Yucca Valley, Calif. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 21, 1930, to Jacqueline and James Murphy of Flushing, N.Y. It was in Flushing that he met the love of his life, Margaret (Peg), who survives him.
Oliver was loved by his wife of 58 years, his family, friends and church community. He is also survived by his children: Regina Freiwald and James Murphy, both of Yucca Valley, Doreen Filipetti of Waltham, Mass., Margaret Murphy of Pasadena, Calif., Aileen Peek of La Mirada, Calif., and Allen Murphy of Switzerland.
He was preceded in death by two of his sons, William and Michael.
He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren - the last of whom is his namesake - with two more due this fall.
Oliver was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the USS Antietam during the Korean campaign. He was also an active congregant of St. Mary of the Valley, Yucca Valley, serving as Knight of Columbus, 3rd degree. He and Peg had a home in Coeur d'Alene and spent many summers in the area.
The family will hold a memorial service in Yucca Valley.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations to be made in Oliver's memory to St. Michael's Priest Residence Center of Morongo Valley, 9466 Navajo Trail, Morongo Valley, CA 92246.
