COEUR d'ALENE - Winning is nice, says the president of the Spokane Shine women's soccer team.

But it's not everything.

"Our purpose is a high level of lives through soccer," said Linda Davis.

The Shine will take on the Oregon Rush this weekend in what the North Idaho woman said is the highest level of women's competitive soccer in the area.

The games will be at 6 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Davis and her family volunteered last year with the program. She believes so much in how it can impact the lives of young people, she stepped up her commitment this year.

"We just felt pretty strongly this program could make a difference," she said.

The Spokane Shine are part of the Women's Premier Soccer League in Spokane. The WPSL is an independent national league "whose main focus is on the development of highly competitive amateur women's soccer teams."

The Spokane Shine is made up of current and future college players, including NCAA Division I athletes.

But they're more than soccer players.

"They're talented at many different things," Davis said.

The Shine's goal is to establish a "moral and physical" compass for players and potential players, Davis said.

"The reason our family is involved is for the purpose of uniting and inspiring young soccer players," she said. "We want the girls to see soccer at a higher level."

Davis said her first season with the Shine has been "unbelievable."

"We sat down with dreams and visions in fall of last year. We have exceeded all of them, so we're very pleased," she said.

The WPSL season runs from May 1 to Aug. 6, with a league championship tournament held the last weekend of July or first weekend of August.

This weekend's games are open to the public and donations will be accepted. Kids will have a chance to meet the players and Sunny the mascot. There will be food and drinks available. Davis is hoping there's a large turnout to see the region's top women soccer players.

"Come out and join us," she said.

The Young Family’s Foundation launched about a year ago with a mission "to empower young, hardworking families to achieve the dream of home ownership. Even if a family saved $25,000, they would still be $19,000 short of the down payment needed to buy a $550,000 home, which is the median price in Kootenai County. It’s estimated that only about 20% of area households can afford to buy a home.
