Soccer tourney continues this weekend

POST FALLS - The inaugural Western Border Cup/Spokane Cup, a youth soccer tourney involving nearly 80 teams put on by the Post Falls-based Idaho Thunder FC, continues today and runs through Sunday at area fields.

Girls divisions include under-9, U10, U11, U12, U12, U14 and U16.

Boys divisions include U10, U11, U12/13, U15, U18 and U19 open.

Locations include River City Middle School, Woodbridge Park, Post Falls High School and Lake City High School, as well as Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.

Mathews finishes third at World Masters weight throw

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Hayden Lake resident and Coeur d'Alene High throws coach George Mathews finished third in the men's 65-69 20-pound World Masters Athletes Championships at Sacramento State on Friday.

Mathews' top throw was 55 feet, 2 inches in the event, held every two years in different parts of the world.

Shock, Seahawks to team for camps today before outdoor game

SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock and Seattle Seahawks are teaming up today for events prior to tonight's 6 p.m. Arena Football League outdoor game between the Shock (7-8) and Utah Blaze (7-8) at Joe Albi Stadium.

The Seahawks will host a Fan Fest from noon to 2 p.m. that will include appearances by members of the Seattle SeaGals and Blue Thunder, the Seahawks' drumline.

The event is free and open to kids of all ages and will take place at the Dwight Merkel Athletic Complex Soccer Fields, located at 5701 North Assembly Street.

After the Fan Fest, former Seahawk Nesby Glasgow and members of the West Valley High football coaching staff will host the Gatorade Junior Training Camp.

It is open to kids between the age of 8-14. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the camp will go from 2 to 4.

During this time, the SeaGals will host a free cheerleading camp for young girls and members of the Blue Thunder will be on hand.
