David Wayne Phelps, 47, passed away due to head trauma on July 5, 2011, at Kootenai Medical Center with his family by his side. David was born July 6, 1963, in Coeur d'Alene to John and Ruby Phelps Sr. He was the youngest of four siblings.
David started working for the Chinese Gardens at the age of 15. He cooked at several local restaurants throughout his life. In 2008 his cooking years ended with a bike accident.
As a kid David loved to play baseball and hang out at the beach. He became an avid fisherman and hunter. He spent many years with his dad and two brothers hunting and fishing. It was always a competition who would catch the biggest fish or get the first shot in. His brothers nicknamed him "dead eye." He never missed a shot. He spent lots of time on camping trips with his family and loved the outdoors. David was always there to lend a helping hand anyway he could. He attended Lake City Community Church.
He is survived by his son, David Phelps; daughter April Phelps; grandson Landon, all from Post Falls. David is further survived by his father, John Phelps Sr.; his wife, Joan, both from Coeur d'Alene; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Cory Phelps Jr. of Athol, and Chuck and Paula Phelps of Hayden; sister Barb Phelps Howard of Moses Lake, Wash.; stepbrother Eric Fundin of Arizona. He is survived by four stepbrothers and one stepsister plus cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Leah Phelps and stepbrother Mark Fundin.
A potluck gathering of family and friends will be held to celebrate David's life from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, at 1304 N. 13th St., Coeur d'Alene.
