MORNING BRIEFING

So Yeon Ryu won the U.S. Women's Open in a playoff Monday in Colorado Springs, Colo., defeating rival South Korean Hee Kyung Seo by three shots in a three-hole playoff to capture the championship.

Ryu returned to the course needing a birdie over the last three holes of regulation to tie Seo, who had finished a day earlier at 3-under 281. Ryu made the birdie on No. 18, then began the playoff about a half-hour later.

After trading pars on No. 16, Ryu teed off down the center of the 17th fairway and Seo hit her shot into a bunker on the right side. Ryu made birdie and Seo made bogey for the two-shot difference. Ryu hit her approach to four feet on No. 18 for another birdie.

There was no major announcement from Tiger Woods on Monday, no matter what the hours of frenzied speculation online said.

Late Sunday, Golf Channel promoted that it would release some news involving Woods on Monday morning. That turned out to be word that his agent, Mark Steinberg, was joining Excel Sports Management.

But before that, Steinberg had to correct the rumors buzzing around the Internet that the golfer was about to make a big announcement about himself.

Baseball

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez had surgery on Monday in Miami to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Rodriguez is expected to be out four to six weeks.

Hundreds of friends, family and well-wishers have gathered in Brownwood, Texas, for the funeral of 39-year-old Shannon Stone, who fell to his death trying to catch a souvenir baseball at a Texas Rangers game.

The attorney for Roger Clemens gave his strongest hint yet that the former baseball star may not testify in his trial in Washington on charges of lying to Congress about using performance-enhancing drugs as he pressed potential jurors not to hold Clemens' silence against him.

Several members of the jury pool under selection in Washington federal court said they would weigh evidence from both sides before deciding on a verdict. The judge and Clemens' attorney had to repeatedly explain the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty and that prosecutors alone bear the burden of proving his guilt.

Football

Less than two weeks before some training camps are scheduled to open, the NFL remains in labor limbo.

Lawyers for the two sides met Monday in New York to clarify language from previous discussions. Several issues are close to resolution, the most significant being the split of total revenues between owners and players.

But snags involving a rookie wage scale, free agency rules and benefits for retired players have slowed the process. While the league's negotiators hope they can present a new collective bargaining agreement to all the owners at their July 21 meeting in Atlanta, not striking a deal before then figures to cause postponement of the start of training camps, and probably cancellation of the Hall of Fame game between St. Louis and Chicago on Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio.

Former All-Pro linebacker Mike Vrabel is retiring from the Kansas City Chiefs and returning to his alma mater as an Ohio State assistant coach, coaching linebackers.

Cycling

Alexandr Kolobnev of Russia became the first cyclist at this year's Tour de France to fail a doping test, the International Cycling Union said. Kolobnev was in 69th place heading into today's 10th stage, but his Katusha team issued a statement saying he is out of the Tour after deciding to "suspend himself according to UCI rules."

Monday was a rest day.
