DOVER - Federal inspectors are investigating construction of the new U.S. Highway 2 bridge after scores of anchor bolts were found to be improperly installed.

The improperly installed anchor bolts were discovered during a routine construction inspection of the new bridge's piers last spring, Idaho Transportation Department officials said on Friday.

The bolts were installed by the project's lead contractor, Sletten Construction Co. The problem was discovered by HDR, an engineering and consulting firm which manages the $22 million project's contract and inspections.

Between 75 and 100 improperly installed bolts were discovered, said ITD District 1 spokeswoman Barbara Babic. A corrective action plan was developed and is in the process of being implemented to address the problem.

The Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of Inspector General is investigating the matter because construction of the new bridge is being funded by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act.
