LEGION: Baseball's inspiring story

Not often is a story worth repeating in a daily newspaper, but The Press provided a real service for its readers. In both the baseball insert and the next day's "My Turn," the article clearly pointed out that this community has good reason to take pride in the American Legion baseball program and the field on which it plays.

I can understand why residents have become so passionate about McEuen Field. The articles were not necessarily about just baseball, but the value of dedication, character development as well as winning and losing in life - all happening at the field during the past 30 years. Coach Lloyd Duman, the other coaches and parent volunteers have given so much to this community. On their backs and with their hands is the soil they have worked tirelessly to build a personalized training facility as well as a tradition for the youth of Coeur d'Alene.

What have been the results? Successfully responsible citizens, a former third baseman now a professional engineer and I sense numerous others not mentioned who have had similar results in their chosen careers. Perhaps too, some are now coaches in the program working to continue the tradition. One could conclude that the McEuen baseball facility is not only Coeur d'Alene's "Field of Dreams" but its "Field For Success." Can we ask for more?
