Friendship Corps seeks volunteers

A training seminar that matches volunteers with homebound seniors is scheduled in September.
The program called "The Friendship Corps" includes segments on community resources, nutrition, emergency preparedness and Medicare. It is offered through the Area Agency on Aging of North Idaho.
Jane Thomas was hired to develop this senior visitation program in conjunction with The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program.
Ten volunteers completed their training in April and were assigned to visit a senior twice a month. Thomas accompanied each of the volunteers on their first visit, and said she was amazed at the instant rapport between each one.
The next training session begins Sept. 8. It will be held for four consecutive Thursdays at the offices of the Area Agency on Aging in Coeur d'Alene. At the end of the training the volunteers will be matched up with a homebound senior.
Thomas said volunteers are given knowledge to be able to converse with seniors about various issues and have the "know how" to recognize what services they might need and to help them access these services.
To volunteer or for more information, call Thomas, 667-3179 ext. 270.
