State clears travel for two megaloads on Highway 95

LEWISTON (AP) - The Idaho Transportation Department has reissued permits allowing ExxonMobil to haul two oversized loads of refinery equipment along a different path than the more controversial route along U.S. Highway 12.

The Lewiston Tribune reports the agency issued permits Wednesday giving the company five days to ship along U.S. Highway 95. The loads would pass through Moscow, connect with Interstate 90 near Coeur d'Alene en route to the oil sands of southern Alberta, Canada.

Opposition has forced the oil company to consider alternatives to using Highway 12 as its preferred route. A small coalition of residents and business owners have fought shipping along the scenic roadway across north central Idaho.

The full size loads occupy both lanes and are some of the longest, tallest and heaviest ever permitted to state highways.
