The remains of two Idaho National Guard soldiers from Coeur d'Alene killed in Iraq last week will be honorably returned to their families today during planeside ceremonies at area airports before being escorted by law enforcement in processions to funeral homes.

The remains of Spc. Nicholas W. Newby, 20, are scheduled to arrive at the Coeur d'Alene Airport in Hayden at 1:10 p.m.

At 1:15 p.m., law enforcement officers from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls police departments and the Idaho State Police will be assisting the United States military in escorting the remains of Newby from the airport to Yates Funeral Home on Fourth Street in Coeur d'Alene.

The procession will cause some temporary traffic delays along the route. One lane of traffic will remain open.

The route will be south on Ramsey Road, continuing onto Northwest Boulevard. The procession will turn east on Garden Avenue to Fourth Street ending at Yates Funeral Home.

The family suggests that community members wanting to pay their respects as the procession passes, a good place to do so would be at Lake City High School where Newby attended.

The remains of Sgt. Nathan R. Beyers, 24, will arrive at the Spokane International Airport at 11 a.m. Washington State Patrol will lead that procession. It will start at XN AIR, a private aviation area, and will be on West Pilot Drive eastbound to South Geiger Boulevard.

A suggested gathering spot to pay respects would be near the intersection of Pilot and Geiger near the airport.

A memorial service for the two soldiers killed will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lake City Community Church, 6000 N. Ramsey Road, Coeur d'Alene.

The public is invited to attend.

A Sunday rosary/vigil service for Beyers will be held on Sunday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, 2203 N. Division St., Spokane, at 4 p.m. A funeral Mass will be on Monday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Ave., Spokane, at 10 a.m.

Interment and inurnment of cremated remains will be on Tuesday at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery, 21702 W. Espanola Road, Medical Lake, Wash., at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

Newby's funeral will be on Monday at Lake City Community Church at 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Both soldiers were killed by an improvised explosive device (IED).

A third soldier, Staff Sgt. Jason Rzepa (pronounced zeppa), 30, also from the Coeur d'Alene area, is recovering at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Both of his legs were amputated below the knees.

He received a Purple Heart medal on Friday while in the military hospital in Iraq.

The three soldiers were in Iraq serving with the Post Falls-based 145th Brigade Support Battalion, part of the 116th Cavalry Heavy Brigade Combat Team. The 116th is on a year-long mission in support of Operation New Dawn. It is expected to return in September.
