AGING: Consider this for seniors

I really liked your first installment on the "Silver Tsunami" last Monday, and look forward to others. In future articles, you may well address the local scene as regard consideration for the mobility-impaired, but here are some things that occurred to me:

The malls really close themselves to those who have problems walking, but maybe they are seeking a different demographic. Grocery stores do an excellent job of being user-friendly, with carts and electric carts; the problem is with shopping for clothing and household items. It is not just the financial aspect that sends us to Target, Shopko, Fred Meyer and Walmart, but the fact that they, too, provide carts to lean on and, if necessary, electric carts to ride. However, all stores could do better in providing benches throughout the store, not just near the entrances, and even more electric carts.

The issue of on-call transportation to stores and appointments is a well-known need of the senior population, which I know is being discussed. I expect to read more about that in upcoming articles.

We appreciate the fact that planning is being done!
