HAYDEN - A fire, possibly started by improperly discarded smoking materials, caused severe damage to a Hayden home early Monday morning.

Crews from Northern Lakes Fire District arrived at the 1,200-square-foot home at 11927 Kelly Rae Drive around 3:30 a.m. to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the home.

The fire was mostly contained to the living room and attic, but the smoke, fire and water damage may be extensive enough throughout to require the structure to be rebuilt.

"Some personal effects and items in the home are salvageable, but there's enough damage to the home that required ventilation on the side," said Jim Lyon, Northern Lakes spokesman.

There were no injuries. Thomas Hansen, a 69-year-old renter and the sole occupant, evacuated before crews arrived.

The cause is being investigated. However, the fire appeared to have started on or near a chair in the living room and possibly started from improperly discarded smoking materials, Lyon said.

Second and third alarms were requested for additional assistance with crews from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and Coeur d'Alene Fire Department.

Hansen told fire crews that he does not have insurance on the contents.

"He also stated that he awoke to smoke and had tried to extinguish the fire, but was unable to before calling 911," a press release states.

An undisclosed owner of the home representing a family trust told firefighters that he had insurance on the structure itself.

There were no working fire alarms in the home, northeast of the intersection of Buckles and Government Way.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist Hansen and a company boarded up the home.

The last unit cleared the scene at 5:36 a.m.
