COEUR d'ALENE - Local cyclists are invited to a "Gran Fondo" mountain bike ride on Saturday at Fourth of July Pass.

"Gran Fondo" is Italian for "Big Ride," but the event's official name is 50 Miles at The Pass. Bikers can choose to ride 10, 17, 35 or 50 miles, with all routes starting at the Idaho Parks and Recreation Park & Ski trailhead at Fourth of July Pass.

Costs for the event vary by distance - $25 for 10 miles, $28 for 17, $35 for 35, and $45 for 50.

Organized by Bicycle Sales & Service on Fourth Street in Coeur d'Alene, the event will benefit the Lake City Trail Builders Association.

Routes will be marked and staffed by course marshals. Aid stations will be placed every five miles along the routes.

Cyclists will travel along trail systems on both sides of Interstate 90. The Panhandle Back Country Horsemen and the Panhandle Nordic Club are the primary users of the southern trails, while the northern section is home territory for the Back Country ATV and North Idaho ATV clubs.

Riders can expect double-track trails and roads, with some single track mixed in. There will be some climbs and some descents.

Moose or elk might be spotted along the scenic routes.

Participants will receive a T-shirt for their efforts, with refreshments and some surprises thrown in.

Fifty-milers will start their ride at 8 a.m., followed by the 35-milers at 9. The shorter distances will kick off about 10:30.
