TRAIL, British Columbia - Tyler Shaffer struck out 12 in a complete-game win as the Prairie Cardinals defeated the Sandpoint Lakers 8-2 in the opening round of the Class AA Area A (district) tournament on Thursday at Butler Park.

Zack Reeder led off the third inning with a solo home run and Eric Cooper hit a two-run double as the Cardinals opened a 4-0 lead. Cooper finished with three RBIs and two runs scored and Daniel Mobeck went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Prairie (22-21), which faces second-seeded Lewis-Clark (27-17) today at 9 a.m.

"Zack kind of sparked us on offense in the third," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. "Tyler really did a good job on the mound. The difference in the game was our defense. We gave up some hits, but they weren't able to string anything together."

Kyle Bradbury had nine strikeouts for Sandpoint (7-15).

Top-seeded Coeur d'Alene (36-19) will face the winner of Thursday's late game between Trail and Cranbrook today at 12:30 p.m.

All district and state tourney games are scheduled for nine innings.
