CENTER: Stodgy? No way, madam

Early in July, Alecia Warren featured an article on the Lake City Center, former the Lake City Senior Center. I think it is great that the center's board feels that improving the facility will bring in much-needed funding.

However, she quoted Colleen Allison's cruel and demeaning statement of "old stodgy folks" using the center. My dictionary defines stodgy as "dull, narrow, commonplace." For Ms. Allison's info, the seniors using the center are anything but stodgy! They come to shoot pool, play a mean game of pinochle and lively canasta, knit items for many wonderful charities and exercise for fitness. There are also the tappers, cloggers and line dancers, qauilters and china painters.

Support groups meet regularly and CPR classes are held there. "Stodgy" is a misnomer for the seniors I know who utilize the center!

Did you know that the center also houses a senior travel club which has traveled all over the world, visiting such countries as Greece, New Zealand, Ireland, Thailand, the Panama Canal, Hawaii and Alaska, to mention but a few of the trips, as well as day trips around the area that enrich their daily lives. They are not sitting around home in front of the tube but are actively involved in promoting their mental and physical well-being.

We are all getting older, but not necessarily old and certainly the seniors I see at the center are not "stodgy."
