TRAIL, British Columbia - Kaleb DeHaas drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen defeated the Prairie Cardinals 10-7 on Saturday at Butler Park to qualify for the Class AA state tournament starting Wednesday at Skip Walker Field in Twin Falls.
With a second chance on Saturday night, Prairie beat Lewis-Clark 8-6 to qualify for state for the first time since 2003.
Coeur d'Alene (38-19) plays Prairie (24-22) today at 11 a.m. in the championship game of the Area A (district) tournament for seeding to state. An if-necessary title game would be played at 2:30 p.m.
Lewis-Clark defeated the host Trail Jays 6-4 in a loser-out game earlier Saturday.
Coeur d'Alene 10, Prairie 7: Zack Reeder led off the game with a double as Prairie jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two walks and two errors by Coeur d'Alene in the inning. Derek Tymesen had a two-run double in the sixth for Prairie to pull within 8-5.
Prairie got to within 8-7 on RBI singles by Eric Cooper and Darnell Metcalf, but Coeur d'Alene's Jason Pattis pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
"Colin pitched well to a small strike zone," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "The team responded well to the challenge of an early deficit."
Grant Curtis had three doubles and Joe Roletto, Chad Nyquist and DeHaas had two hits apiece for Coeur d’Alene.

Loggers solve Blue Devils, advance to state A tourney
OSBURN — Sean Sutton hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs as the Coeur d’Alene Loggers defeated the Moscow Blue Devils 10-2 in a loser-out game in the Class A Area A (district) tournament at Morehouse Field to qualify for the state tournament at Treasure Valley Community College starting on Thursday.
“We were 0-5 against them coming into the loser-out game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tom Barlow said. “We finished the season 1-5 against Moscow, but that one counted pretty big.”
Leif Krapas struck out five in a complete game for Coeur d’Alene, which eliminated Prairie earlier on Saturday with a 7-4 win.
“It feels great after being 10-runned by them earlier in the tournament,” said Barlow of beating Moscow. “To have the kids play the way they did was crazy. They showed they wanted it more than them. Leif was lights out on the mound and we banged out 16 hits. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
Coeur d’Alene (31-21) will face Lewis-Clark in the championship game today at 1 p.m. in Osburn. Both teams qualify for state.
Coeur d’Alene 7, Prairie 4: The Loggers drew nine walks and capitilized on three Cardinal errors to remain alive in the tournament.
John Galloway had two hits for Prairie.
