Lums, Cardinals fall in state tourney opener

TWIN FALLS - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen suffered a loss in their state AA American Legion tournament opener to Pocatello 6-3 at Skip Walker Field, but it may be the loss of a couple of key players that may make their goal of a state title a little tougher.

Coeur d'Alene pitchers Pete Hoffman and Derek Priano left the game with separate injuries on Wednesday, putting a dent in their pitching depth for the tournament.

Hoffman left the game after being struck by a line drive in the third inning and Priano injured his knee in the eighth inning chasing after a fly ball. Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman doesn't expect either to return in the tournament.

"Pete got hit right above his elbow on his pitching (right) arm," Duman said. "It was pretty swollen when we looked at it. Derek caught his cleat in the grass and it doesn't look like he'll be back either."

Chad Nyquist had an RBI single for Coeur d'Alene (39-20), which faces the Twin Falls Cowboys today at noon PDT in a loser-out game. Twins Falls lost to Boise 4-1 late Wednesday.

Box score information was not available.

Treasure Valley 25

Prairie 16

TWIN FALLS - Joey Martarano hit two three-run home runs and drove in 10 runs as Treasure Valley defeated the Prairie Cardinals in 10 innings in their opening round game at the state AA American Legion baseball tournament at Skip Walker Field.

Gill Givens went 3 for 6 with three runs scored and four RBIs and Tyler Burnett went 4 for 5 with a solo home run in the seventh for Prairie (24-24), which faces Jerome today at 9 a.m. PDT in a loser out game.

"This is probably the hardest loss I've had to deal with as a coach," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. "We had a five-run lead in the ninth inning and let it slip away."

Prairie held a one-run lead before a fielder error allowed Treasure Valley to score the tying run in the ninth. The Stars went on to score 12 runs in the 10th inning to move on to face Eagle, which defeated Jerome 9-4 in an earlier game.

"It's tough to come down and play one of the best teams, if not the best and have them down," Frank said. "We had them beat, but let it slip away. It's funny how baseball comes down to a game of inches and we were one pitch away. I felt like I let the team down."
