Sting U13 girls capture State Cup title

Caitlin Barber scored the winning goal in double overtime as the Coeur d'Alene Sting under-13 girls gold soccer team won the Idaho State Cup last weekend in Twin Falls.

The victory advances the Sting to the Far West Regionals in Boise June 20-26.

The Sting opened State Cup play by beating the BNSC Napoli 3-0. Cydney Roop, Isabella Scott and Halle Eborall each scored a goal. Coeur d'Alene then blanked PVCS Edge 4-0 with Julia McCaw scoring two goals and Caitlin Barber and Cydney Roop each scoring once. On Sunday, the Sting beat Real Boise 3-1 with Julia McCaw scoring two goals and Caitlin Barber scoring one.

In Monday's championship game, Sydney Quimby scored two of the goals for the Sting in a 3-2 victory over Super Nova Elite of Boise.

Sting U13 boys: The Sting placed fourth at the Idaho State Cup in Twin Falls.

The Sting started off with a 2-0 victory over the Idaho Thunder in the first game. This was followed by a 3-3 tie with eventual state champion Real Nampa. On Sunday, the Sting defeated Boise Super Nova 3-1 to just fall short of the state championship game based off points. The Sting suffered its first loss of the tournament on Monday in the third/fourth place game to the Boise Nationals.

Sting U14 girls Swoboda: The Sting went 2-2 at the Idaho State Cup last weekend in Twin Falls.

The Sting beat Xtreme 6-0. Alissa Jolliff had two goals and an assist, Maddison Ward had two goals, Sydney Lucker and Hannah Shrontz scored once each, and Rebekah Brendis, Bailey Burgin and Aitana Vernon had one assist each.

The Sting beat Super Nova Premier 3-0 on goals by Megan Lowery, Maddison Ward and Natalie Wheelock. Rebekah Brendis and Alissa Jolliff had one assist each, and Tiegan Horton had three saves in the shutout in goal.

The Sting lost in a shootout 4-3 to BNSC Alemania, after the teams were tied at 1 after regulation: Megan Lambert, Megan Lowery, Maddison Ward and Natalie Wheelock had one goal each for the Sting.

The Sting lost in a shootout 3-1 to Super Nova Elite, following a 1-all tie in regulation. Meaghan Bare and Megan Lambert scored one goal each, and Alissa Jolliff had one assist.

Real North Idaho Avalanche U18 boys: The Avalanche won a tournament in Creston, British Columbia, last weekend, going undefeated and shutting out all of its opponents.

Mat Evans (Bonners Ferry) was in goal for the Avalanche, who were led offensively by Alek Mendez (Bonners Ferry) with three goals and three assists, and Lane Smith (Sandpoint) with two goals and two assists.

Real North Idaho is a club team from North Idaho, comprised of juniors and seniors from Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Bonners Ferry, Moscow, Pullman and Sandpoint.

The Avalanche are looking to replace their five seniors with players who will be graduating in 2012 and 2013.

Two of the graduating seniors, Evans and Mendez, have accepted scholarship offers from the University of Great Falls in Montana.

BASKETBALL

Free camp nears: The North Idaho Christian School girls basketball staff and Genesis Prep Academy will be putting on their 7th annual free basketball camp June 13, 14, 15, 20 and 21 at Real Life Church in Post Falls.

The camp is for players entering grades 5-12. Grades 5-8 will go from 9-11 a.m., and grades 9-12 will go from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Players do not have to attend all camps. The camp is for girls just starting to play basketball as well as those who play on high school teams.
