POLSON - Whoa, who put Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale in Mission Valley Mariners uniforms?

The Mariners' A team threw their 1-2 punch on the mound at the opposing team in a doubleheader sweep over the Libby Loggers last Saturday.

Backed up by some impressive offensive numbers at the plate, spring breakup happened early for the Loggers at O'Malley Park.

Mission Valley used a seven-run second inning to get the jump on Libby in the first game as they powered to a 10-0 victory.

Jack Humphreys and Austin Von Tom doubled in that big inning to drive in runs, while Justin Evertz and Chris Clary also singled to plate a run.

Kevin Hagadorn also drove two more in the bottom of the third and the Mariners added another insurance run in the top of the fourth.

However, they didn't need all the offense because pitcher Kellen Hoyt threw a one-hitter by getting ahead in the count and forcing the Logger batters to pop up or ground out.

They followed that up with a 13-1 victory in the second game, due to another big inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, with Mission Valley leading 4-1, thanks to RBIs by Humphreys and Clary, the Mariners exploded for nine runs.

Hagedorn hit a two-run homer, while Von Tom drove home two runs with a single and then Clary, who has quickly become the most feared red-headed baseball player since Mark McGwire, homered again to drive in three. RBIs by Humphreys and Cole McArthur served to add to the lead.

Again, the pitching was great for the Mariners. Josh Rustad struck out 10, showcasing a lot of movement on his ball, while picking up the win for the M's.

Clary finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBIs and four other Mariners had multi-hit games.

On Sunday, the Mariners had a tall task against a Class AA Kalispell Lakers team that has been dominant so far this season. In the first game, Kalispell had seven extra-base hits on their way to a 17-7 victory, but the Mariners made some noise in the second game.

After falling behind 8-2, the Mariners staged a three-run rally thanks to a single RBI by Bradley Pichler and a two-run double by Evertz. While the M's came up close they certainly made the Class AA Lakers sweat a little.

Evertz finished the game 2-for-3 and also hit a home run, as did Rustad. The Mariners record is now 8-9 on the season.
