Appliance blamed for fire

COEUR d'ALENE - A house fire in the Sunshine Meadows neighborhood in north Coeur d'Alene on Wednesday was probably caused by problems with an electrical "appliance" in a bedroom, fire officials said Friday.
Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Deputy Chief Glenn Lauper said some follow-up investigation will be done on the unit.
He declined to say what exactly the appliance was, but it was in a 12-year-old boy's bedroom and not a kitchen, laundry room or garage.
The Woodland Middle School student was home alone sick when the fire started on the 2700 block of Wilbur Avenue.
The boy was not hurt and he managed to save the family's two small dogs.
His bedroom and an adjacent office were badly damaged by flames, and the entire home suffered extensive heat and smoke damage.
Lauper said the department estimated there was $140,000 in total damage and lost property.
"It's re-buildable, but not habitable right now," he said.
Lauper said the department purchased locally an identical appliance for testing.
The follow-up testing could take an extended period of time, he said.
The insurance company is doing an independent investigation, Lauper said.
The fire department could report its investigation findings to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which would also test the product.
"If they find a problem then it gets recalled," he said.
