Prairie rallies in 7th; Lums win twice
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 7 months AGO
SPOKANE — Derek Tymesen hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the top of the seventh inning as the Prairie Cardinals defeated the Spokane Blue Devils 7-4 in the opening game for Prairie in the Battle of the Borders tournament Friday night at Jackson Field.
“It was a team effort,” Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. “We started off facing some adversity early with some errors, but we stayed confident and picked each other up. They were a good hitting team, but our pitching kept us in the game and we were able to capitalize on their mistakes and found a way to win.”
Kurt South hit a two-run double to tie the game in the sixth for Prairie (3-0), which faces the Spokane North Stars today at 10 a.m., and the Trail Jays at 3 p.m., both at Jackson Field.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen hit four home runs in an 18-4 win over the Spokane Cannons in the first game, and got six strikeouts from Ransom Storm in the second game as they downed the Cranbrook Bandits 8-4 at the Battle of the Borders American Legion baseball tournament at McEuen Field.
Mitch Bevacqua hit two home runs in the opener — a three-run homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the fifth. Colin Comack added a three-run home run and Pete Hoffman a grand slam in a seven-run sixth for Coeur d’Alene (4-3). Comack struck out six.
“We were swinging the bats really well against Spokane,” Coeur d’Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. “Mitch hit just like a No. 3 batter should tonight. Jason Pattis has been hitting the ball really well also. Everything he hit was right on the line.”
Comack, Bevacqua and Grant Curtis had two hits apiece in the nightcap as the Lumbermen downed the Bandits.
“Ransom is getting stronger on the mound and starting to get those innings he needs,” Duman said. “We played more or less small ball against Cranbrook. It was a good learning experience to see some of our kids get some at-bats. That’s what this tournament is about, getting to see where we’re at. That was the goal, to get some teams some games in.”
Coeur d’Alene faces the Spokane Bandits at 3 p.m. and Pullman Patriots at 8 p.m. today at McEuen Field.
