When Solina Bressler and her brother, Jarin, look back on their childhood, Solina said, most of their memories involve singing.

Not at home, she added.

At weddings, church choirs, fundraisers and school assemblies.

Pretty much anywhere there was an audience.

"I can remember my brother and I when we were probably 4 or 5, just very little, starting out and singing," said Solina, now 23. "I don't think I've ever had a time when I was not singing."

Raised learning Norwegian folk songs from their mother, Ina Bressler, the siblings have now grown out of school assembly performances and made it to much bigger stages, Solina said.

The mother and children have gained attention as the Bressler Trio, performing three-part harmonies of the traditional music Ina was taught by her parents, Norwegian immigrants.

The trio received warm welcome from audiences during a recent tour of the Seattle area, Solina said. They also just released a CD, "Reflections of Norway."

"We realized that with Norwegian folk music, there's a lot of people who do straight instrumental, but not very many who did vocal," Solina said. "There's really a niche for that."

Now that it's time for the younger members of the trio to move on with their college educations, the proper sendoff was clear: A concert.

The Bressler Trio has scheduled a performance for 7 p.m. today, featuring both their Norwegian classics and gospel and pop songs from different eras.

Proceeds will go toward tuition for Jarin and Solina, both just graduated from North Idaho College and planning to attend the University of Idaho in the fall.

"It's nice to be able to come together as a family and be able to bring something to an audience and see people really enjoying it," Solina said.

The concert will include readings from letters written by a Norwegian immigrant. Singing arrangements will match the popular style from the years of the letters, Solina said, spanning traditional Norwegian music and American pop songs from the early to mid 20th century.

"It shows we have a little bit of variety in what we do," Solina said.

The trio will be accompanied by Austin and Jenny Little of the Panhandle Polecats, she added. The show will also include performances by yodeler Rod Erickson.

"We just thought it would be fun to combine a concert where we have several different artists coming together," Solina said.

She will be studying marketing at U of I, she added. Jarin, 20, will be working to earn his CPA.

Solina will also study abroad this summer in Oslo, Norway.

"This will be my last concert before I leave," Solina said.

The concert, sponsored by the Sons of Norway, will be held at the Sons of Norway lodge at 200 E. Railroad Ave. in Post Falls.

Tickets are $10 at the door.

Many audience members respond to the group with their own stories about immigration and homeland traditions, Solina said.

"It's just been a really fun experience to sing with my family and just a real honor to share that heritage with others," she said. "Just to be able to get together and make music is fun."
