COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen won a pair of games with thrilling finishes Saturday to reach the championship game of the Border Wars American Legion baseball tournament.

Joe Roletto hit a two-run walk-off single in the first game as Coeur d'Alene scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to surprise the Spokane Bandits 7-6.

Then, the Lumbermen let almost all of an 11-2 lead slip away before holding off the Pullman Patriots 11-10.

Coeur d'Alene (6-3), which won the McEuen pool of the tournament with a 4-0 record, will play in the title game today at 5 at McEuen Field. The Lums will play the winner of the pool at Jackson Field in Spokane, which will be determined following a couple of games today. And the Prairie Cardinals, 2-1 in the Jackson pool, are one of the teams in contention for the other spot in the title game.

"It's nice to get an extra game," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "That's nice; we've been in two tournaments, and we're in two title games. Our players are taking a lot of ownership."

Against Pullman, Grant Curtis drove in five runs for Coeur d'Alene, including a three-run homer which increased the Lums' lead to 11-2. But Pullman scored three runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh, pulling within 11-10 on Brandon Hoodley's three-run homer with two out.

Duman then pulled starting pitcher Derek Priano, whom he praised for a strong outing until late. Reliever Matt Cade yielded a single, then struck out the next batter to end the game.

Against the Bandits, Chad Nyquist hit a solo home run in the fourth inning off the 360-foot pole in left center for Coeur d'Alene.

in pool play

SPOKANE - Darnell Metcalf had two singles and a home run to finish with three RBIs in their second game as the Prairie Cardinals defeated the Trail Jays 9-5 after losing to the Spokane Northstars 6-5 in nine innings in pool play of the Battle of the Borders American Legion tournament at Shadle Park High's Jackson Field.

Metcalf tied their game with the Northstars in the seventh inning and Gil Givens doubled to score Zack Reeder with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. Spokane capitalized on errors in the bottom of the inning to score the final two runs.

"It just didn't go our way in that game," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. "We had two outs in the ninth and a miscommunication between the second baseman and first base on an error that cost us."

Gll Givens had three doubles and two RBIs as the Cardinals rebounded to down the Trail Jays in their second game of the day.

"Darnell and Gil were our workhorses in that game and we rode their backs," Frank said. "Derek (Tymesen) came in with us down 5-0 and shut it down for the rest of the game for us."

Prairie (4-1) concludes pool play today against the Northeast 49ers at 1 p.m. The Cardinals enter today's play in a three-way tie for the top spot in pool play with the Spokane Blue Devils and Spokane Northstars, all at 2-1, with the winner advancing to the championship game tonight at McEuen Field in Coeur d'Alene at 5 p.m.
