All about art

COEUR d'ALENE - Sculptors from North Idaho, Washington, Montana and elsewhere will showcase their artwork on the streets of Coeur d'Alene.
Representing the city's ArtCurrents program, 14 pieces are being placed in the downtown corridor and City Park. All for sale, the sculptures will be on display for one year or until purchased.
Pieces include wildlife - a moose, an elk and a heron - abstracts and human forms. They range in price from $1,500 to $45,000.
"We feel pretty good that we got the quality of art we did," said Steve Anthony, liaison for the Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission. "What better place to display your art than downtown Coeur d'Alene? This is the first time the city has endeavored to do something like this."
The Arts Commission, a 12-member panel appointed by the mayor, began work on the ArtCurrents program in March, Anthony said. Member Joe Sharnetsky led the effort.
Modeled after similar programs in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Cheyenne, Wyo., ArtCurrents provides quality artwork at a low cost to the city, Anthony explained.
Granite and steel bases were installed at the artwork sites, paid for by the Arts Commission fund. The bases allow for future sculptures in the same locations.
"We'll replace (the artwork) with a new group next year," Anthony said.
This Friday, a dedication ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. on the corner of Sixth Street and Sherman Avenue. Mayor Sandi Bloem will officiate the event.
Attendees will tour the ArtCurrents sites, moving in a circular route from City Park to Sherman Avenue and Lakeside Avenue.
"And we'll have a nice brochure that explains each art piece, the artist, (and) the price they're asking," Anthony said.
