Convertec status uncertain

COEUR d'ALENE - Convertec Corp., run by North Idaho businessman Adam M. Johnson, has ended service on some customers without explanation.
It could not be confirmed on Monday whether Convertec remained in business or was shutting down.
Neither a cell phone for Johnson nor phone numbers for Convertec offices, which had operated in Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Spokane Valley were in service Monday. Larry Purviance, an attorney for Johnson on criminal charges this year in Kootenai County, did not return multiple messages left by The Press seeking comment.
Johnson was recently sentenced for carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence. That charge stemmed from a shooting in downtown Coeur d'Alene in December 2009, when two Moses Lake men were shot.
Johnson was arrested again in April of this year for alleged drug activities.
Pam Houser, president and CEO of the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber lost Internet phone service without explanation in March or April.
She said Johnson left the chamber's board of directors late last year. She said he was a tenant at the chamber's building from June 2010 to January of this year, and left without explanation.
Johnson helped found Convertec in 2004. The name later changed to Convertec Corp. from Convertec Business Solutions LLC. The business has sold communications and technology services.
The Idaho Secretary of State's website shows Convertec Corp. remains in good standing. Eric Keck, Post Falls city administrator, said the business license for the company is no longer active.
Snow Peak Forest Products' Internet phone service through Convertec went down in mid-April without an explanation, said Jon Howell, vice president of sales.
Snow Peak moved to Spokane Valley from Coeur d'Alene last month.
"Service had been spotty prior to (ending all together) with no support on their behalf when we inquired," Howell said. He said Snow Peak had been a Convertec customer since January 2008.
Howell said phone numbers Snow Peak had for 20 years are unavailable.
The city of Spokane Valley shows Convertec has a current business license, with an address of 9507 E. Sprague Ave., which is the address of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Eldonna Shaw, president and CEO of the Spokane Valley chamber, said Convertec was a tenant in the chamber's business incubator until this spring.
The business had actually overstayed the 18-month limit, she said.
She said Johnson had expressed a "need to conserve and pull back" when Convertec left the incubator.
Convertec is no longer a member of the chamber, Shaw said.
