'It was a good day'

RATHDRUM - Usually, you rest a little bit the day before a race.

Brian Hadley did the opposite.

On Saturday, the Coeur d'Alene man biked 112 miles - the Ironman Coeur d'Alene course - in 4 hours, 48 minutes. Not bad for a training ride. And this was after biking 56 miles in 2:17 on Friday.

Neither ride slowed down the 36-year-old, as he won Sunday's Radiant Lake Triathlon in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

"It was a good day," Hadley said Monday.

Hadley was third out of the water with a half-mile swim in 12:25, took the lead with the fastest bike ride in 31:37, average 27 mph for the 14.4-mile course, and then finished with an 18:07 run over 3.1 miles, also the fastest of the day.

Derek Garcia, 27, of Post Falls was second in 1:06:51, while Nathan Birdsall, 24, of Coeur d'Alene was third in 1:09:00.

Nicolette DeMoe of Coeur d'Alene was the first woman, finishing in 1:25:14. The 30-year-old edged Jaimee Myers, 23, of Coeur d'Alene, in 1:25:23. Andrea Wells, 41, Sagle, was third in 1:25:40.

There were 118 finishers.

Hadley, who will be competing in Ironman Coeur d'Alene on June 26, said his season is coming together well. Radiant Lake was a tune up for the longer Ironman, 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run.

"It was a good chance to practice the whole thing in sequence," he said.

Hadley, who completed last year's Ironman Coeur d'Alene in 9:24, will be starting with the pro field this year, thanks to a third-place age-group finish last year. He said he has been working on his swim, and believes he's primed for a good race.

"I'm hoping this is the year all the pieces fit together," he said.
