COEUR d'ALENE - After behind hit by pitches the first two times at bat on Wednesday, Coeur d'Alene shortstop Mitch Bevacqua just wanted something to hit his third time in the batter's box on Wednesday.

He got it and didn't miss it.

Bevacqua sent a 2-1 pitch by Prairie pitcher Joel Schwalbach over the left field fence for a grand slam home run in a 10-run third inning as the Lumbermen defeated the Cardinals 14-2 in five innings in the first game of a class AA North Idaho League doubleheader at McEuen Field.

Coeur d'Alene also won the second game 14-4.

"At that point, I didn't know if I was going to get a chance to hit today," said Bevacqua of the third at-bat. "I just wasn't thinking about getting beaned again. I knew it was out."

Pitcher Colin Comack of Coeur d'Alene (11-3, 4-0 NIL) doubled to lead off the third inning. Comack also struck out seven and allowed one earned run in the opener.

"Pitchers have days when they feel good," Comack said. "I felt good so I kept throwing hard."

"Colin was fantastic tonight," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "He was in control from first pitch to his last and set us up for the second game. He's really fun to watch."

Prairie (5-3, 2-2) got on the board in the fifth as Riley Denney and Tyler Burnett singled with one out and came around to score on an error. Luke Howell added an RBI single in the inning for Prairie.

In the nightcap, Chad Nyquist hit a two-run home run to end the game in the fifth inning for the Lumbermen.

"Sometimes it takes us a few innings to get going offensively," Duman said. "Once we got going (in the first game), it was infectious."

Coeur d'Alene has won seven straight games entering tonight's nonleague doubleheader against the Spokane Blue Devils at 5 p.m. at McEuen.

"Our goal is to finish with the top seed in our district," Duman said. "Our goal is to be the home team in each of our games."

Denney hit a solo home run for Prairie in the second game.

"We didn't come ready to play tonight," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. "We played timid, scared and flat-out got outplayed and outscored. They wanted it more than us."

Prairie had won five of its previous six games entering Wednesday.

"We were playing confident at the start of the year," Frank said. "This was a different set of kids and coaches tonight. We had a big test tonight. Hopefully it's just a pre-test before districts. It's a good assessment of where we're at and right now - they're the better team."

Prairie hosts Cranbrook, British Columbia, in a doubleheader Sunday at Post Falls High.
